a coined word that combines “literacy” and “Terakoya.” Terakoya refers to a kind
of private elementary school of the Edo period in Japan.
We believe that regardless of language or location, everyone has the fundamental right to receive an education. However, there are still people in Japan who do not have access to a basic education.
Our goal is to help such people achieve basic literacy in their native languages, and in doing so, enrich and diversify Japanese society.
☆We provide translated Japanese school textbooks and kana-(reading aid) inserted textbooks to public elementary and junior high school students whose mother tongue is a language other than Japanese.
☆We hold lectures and workshops to inform people on the importance of literacy.
☆We do research on literacy education and produce educational materials to help children enjoy their studies, placing a special emphasis on children with special needs. (We just recently began researching DAISY--Digital Accessible Information System in 2011.)
★need translated or kana-inserted school textbooks, (Please let us know

How about joining “Literakoya Niigata”? If you can understand Japanese language (junior high school textbook level) and translate into your language with your computer at home, why don't you join us and help foreign children struggling in Japanese schools.
If you are interested in our activities, please send us an email.
Most of our volunteer translators are university students in Niigata and are usually working at home. We have few chances to gather, though, we can communicate with each other by attending the workshops held by our group or internet site.
DONATE or BECOME A SUPPORTING MEMBER
Our activities are financed mainly by some foundations in Niigata Prefecture and by donations from a few individuals. These funds enable us to make translated textbooks for foreign children studying in Japanese public schools and to pay the volunteer translators a little reward.
We think the translation volunteers require special skills in both Japanese language and their own language and should be paid enough as highly skilled workers. Your financial support will help foreign children in Japan develop their own language through the translated textbooks provided by our volunteers as well as in school subjects. Moreover, these volunteers can earn their school fees not by simple part time job such as dish-washing and cleaning but by meaningful activities. Your support will surely contribute to making Japanese society a more peaceful and more multi-cultural one.
Please send us an email if you would like to become a supporting member who pays 1000yen per year to support our activities financially. Donations will also be welcomed. Please go to the DONATION section on the upper left side of this page.
